Your : Your husband is very lucky to have you care for him. Unfortunately, there's isn't much available over-the-counter to help w/his cough. There's no absolute way to know whether a humidifier will help or hurt without just trying it out. Just beware that increasing water content in the air may increase your risk for mold & mildew, too. Anti-cough & anti-mucous over-the-counter medications can be tried but again, there's no guarantee. Given his smoking history, i'd be worried about copd/emphysema. He may need some sort of inhaler which is only available by prescription. Without a doctor's visit, the only supportive care considerations are getting plenty of fluids & rest and quitting smoking completely! did your husband ever mention why he doesn't want to go to the doctor? From a practical perspective, there are many offices/clinics/urgent cares that are open "after hours" so your husband wouldn't have to take time off work. Most family physicians & general internists are interested in developing a mutually respectful relationship if he'll give us a chance. Good luck!
