Cysts : Cysts in the ovary are very common in young woman. I am unclear if you have a mass in your stomach in addition to the cyst, or you believe the mass in your stomach is the cyst. If the latter is the case then that would be a pretty large ovarian cyst and would need to be removed. If not then this mass needs to be investigated. Make sure your doctor explains what they found and what the treatment plan is. Take care.

Ovarian : Ovarian cysts form from each of the cell types in the ovary. Ovarian cysts can rarely be caused by cancer and most ovarian cancer is not diagnosed until the cancer is advanced. Consequently, we worry about ovarian cysts that do not resolve or disappear by themselves. The most common cysts are called functional cysts because they come from follicles (a cyst containing and egg - normal each cycle). Functional cysts usually resolve in 4 months at most. Functional or simple cysts are round/oblong on ultrasound and they have a clear internal shape. When the ovarian cysts is large (greater than 10 cm), contain internal growths, are solid versus fluid filled, or occur in older women, particularly after menopause then we worry. Some ovarian cysts produce hormones that can help with the diagnosis. Surgical removal is really the only way to be certain of the diagnosis. The ultrasound appearance can be very helpful but eventually surgery is need when they do not resolve. I cannot tell from your history exactly where the cyst is located. I assume that it is in the ovary because you described an ovarian cysts. Technically, the ovary is located in the pelvis or abdomen and not the stomach which is an organ that digests the food we eat. Many of my patients describe abdominal problems as stomach problems. I suggest that you speak with your physician to see about tests that can help determine the cause. Your physician will know whether surgery is really necessary. Best wishes.
