Making : Making an appointment was wise. The bite could be infected and definitely needs to be looked at.

I : I am glad you are taking your son to the doctor. A few points for the future: 1. Spiders rarely attack people. 2. Big spiders can inject their venom into the skin usually when crushed. 3. If you are living in a rural area you may want to know your spiders(brown recluse spider - most common in your area. Your local vet may know others - see attached link) . 4. If there are multiple bites on the skin it could be a tic. Consider other options for the bite and let your doctor have the adequate information to make reasoned choices for treatment. Especially if you have not captured the spider, doctors need to think clearly whether steroid ointment or antibiotics are needed for the healing. 5. If it is a spider bite and there was a major reaction be prepared for the future. Ask your doctor if a kit like they have for bee stings is worthwhile. 6. Prevention is the way to go. Shaking clothes, gloves when moving wood etc., but if there are spiders in your home you may want to consult a local pesticide company. I hope this helps.

It : It sounds like the bite might be secondarily infected. Having a doctor look at it is a good idea.
