Most : Most painful lumps that arise acutely (quickly) in the nose are infected hair follicles or skin infections. If it has been there for a while, it may be time to have it evaluated as you may require antibiotics. Sometimes, these lumps may develop into abscesses requiring drainage. Although extremely unlikely, tumors (benign and malignant) may arise in the nose and may cause pain. Most treatment depends on the location, duration, appearance, and severity of symptoms. If it is close to the opening of the nose (vestibule) and it has been quick to arise (and present for only a short time) - warm compresses and pain medication (advil (ibuprofen) and tylenol) may help, however, if the pain is severe, or it has continued to worsen, i would advise an exam immediately to be treated appropriately.
