A member asked:

Could mono be something else? hi there. i went to my university clinic today and tested positive for mono. however, my ex boyfriend just recently found out he has hsv-2. i always used condoms with him, but could this mono but not mono? could it be from hi

No, : No, the test should not cross over, so it should not be hsv-2 masquerading as mono. The mono test is quite accurate. Always use a condom to prevent infections. Hsv 2 test is a skin/mucous membrane culture; mono is a blood test.

Separate issues: The blood test for mono is specific for mono. You might also get HSV2 which can produce genital or oral herpes, but the patterns are quite distinctive and different from mono.
