Chronic : Chronic throat clearing could be several different disease processes, or sometimes a combination of problems. Post nasal drainage that is allergic or nonallergic, chronic sinusitus, asthma, or laryngeal pharyngeal reflux can all present with these symptoms. Because you don't notice stuffy nose or nasal drainage, for the time being let's rule out nasal allergy and chronic sinus infection. Coughing after laughing is frequently consider asthma until it is ruled out. Chronic throat clearing alone is a frequent symptom in laryngeal pharyngeal reflux (lpr) in gastroesophageal reflux, heartburn is often noted. In that disease, acid is coming up from the stomach 40 or more times a day, damaging the esophagus. In lpr, acid may only come up from the stomach once a day, but high enough it hits and injures the vocal folds and the pharynx. This causes irritation and thick mucous in the throat and around the voice box. The usual treatment is some change in diet, possible raising the head of your bed at night, and reflux medication. Your ENT doctor is the best person to diagnose this problem, and if he also specializes in allergy, should be able to help figure out if allergies or asthma are part of the picture as well.
