Hello. : Hello. There isn’t much info here. First question is this an abnormal vaginal discharge or not? Normal discharge from the vagina is a white liquid with no odor. It usually has a ph (how acidic it is) between 3.8 to 4.2. Normal discharge should not lead to itching or pain. There is usually more of this discharge during ovulation, right before your period and when pregnant. If you are younger than age 21 years old, than it is likely that the doctor won’t do a pap smear. The american college of obstetricians and gynecologist recommend that it not be done until 21 and be done every two years until you reach the age of 29. If the doctor believes you have an unhealthy vaginal discharge the doctor will likely check the ph of the secretions. He or she look at a small amount of it under a slide with potassium hydroxide (which is why they call it a KOH test) usig a microscope to look for yeast. Gram stains and cultures may also be done to check for bacteria. Your doctor also may test you for certain infections that include sexually transmitted diseases.

Unsure: The pap smear may not reveal the problem associated with a discharge, but a pelvic exam will be necessary along with possible cultures and / or microscopic slides.
