Valve Surgery: There are ongoing investigations using "one way valves" which are placed in the airways of patients with emphysema. These valves allow air to escape from areas of the lung where it is trapped and helps reduce hyperinflation (excess air trapped in the chest). Some of these valve studies are very far along and a few have been presented to the fda to consider approval for use in the US.

Possibly: There is a procedure called an endobronchial valve, which blocks specific segments of the lung to help improve function. It is like lung volume reduction without the surgery. It is still quite experimental.
