Strongly : Strongly recommend against a parent giving a child antibiotics without a specific medical indication. Now a days, doctors don't give antibiotics just because a child's ear hurts. The reason is that often times, there this is not due to a bacterial infection. I would give your pediatrician a call, for further guidance.

Would not: While Augmentin would be one the medications used to treat an ear infection, ear pain alone does not confirm the diagnosis. Your son should be examined by his pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Until then, symptomatic relief--such as tylenol, (acetaminophen) Motrin or lying on a heating pad will help relieve the pain.

M.D. visit: I would suggest using Tylenol (acetaminophen) for children until your pediatrician can check his ear. At this age, from your description, he probably does have an ear infection. Your pediatrician will determine if there is an infection that requires antibiotics.
