Quite a while: Prozac (fluoxetine) taken over a period of three or more months, then stopped, can show the presence of fluoxetine for five or more weeks. Prozac has both a right and left isomer (like looking at yourself in the mirror and raising your hand and watching your raised r hand appear to be your l hand). Breakdown of fluoxetine yields nor-fluoxetine which lasts 2 x as long in the body as fluoxetine.

Apprx. 20 days: Prozac (fluoxetine) is a long acting medicine , between the original compound and the active metabolite the half life is around 96 hrs , so it takes approximately five times that for the level to drop to negligible.

A 33-year-old female asked:
Took 5mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) for 6 days. How many days would it take to leave my system?

Less than a week: The usual starting dose for fluoxetine (Prozac) is 20 mg, so you were on a VERY low dose, so after 6 doses there is not very much med in your body. The time for 1/2 the medicine to be eliminated from the body in a healthy person is 3 days at most, so it would take about 6 days for the last dose to be completely eliminated. It may be gone sooner depending on how quickly your liver metabolizes it.

More than 2 weeks: The half life of this medication is as long as three days. It will be out of your system in 15 days depending on individual factors related to the patient. Ask your prescriber.

Prozac (fluoxetine): Has half-life of up to 72 hours, so that multiplied by 5 means that it can stay in your system for up to 2 weeks or so.

A 45-year-old member asked:
How long does it take for Prozac (fluoxetine) to become effective?

3 weeks or more: Most ssris start to show effectiveness against depression about 2 weeks after starting them. Prozac (fluoxetine) is about 1 week slower due to its long half-life (it takes longer to reach a steady blood level). So a good estimate is about 3 weeks. But everybody's different; some people feel better faster, others need to wait longer. Also, improvement is gradual, it doesn't become "effective" all at once.
