Hard : Hard to tell without a picture, but sounds like you should see your surgeon or go see a dermatologist to discuss the diagnosis and treatment options. Perhaps a bacterial culture would be helpful since it sounds like it has pus. I hope that helps.

Infected scar: Possibility of very long standing infection of the scar. May need to culture the drainage. Systemic antibiotics, topical bactroban (mupirocin) may help.

Expertise needed: You need to see a real, full time wound care doc. Infection for so long is absolutely unlikely as infections do not smolder like this. You most likely have a piece of suture at the base of the wound that has moved up close to the skin where your body identifies it as foreign body trying to get rid of it. Wound care docs are trained to look at causes of wounds and not start illogical treatments.

Vascular leaks: The retina is very thin, very fragile but richly endowed with blood vessels and it sits on another carpet of blood vessels. Re-attachment surgery has to restructure a detached retina in the presence of all of this vascular richness and fragility and sometimes smaller vessels can leak or even vessels at the site of entry into the eye. This will clear usually with time.

Treat symptoms first: You may offer comfort care with rest, fluids and medication for now and monitor his progress, depending on what type of surgery was performed, it is difficult to accurately guide you perfectly on how to move forward. Contact the surgeon if your son is not improving over the next few days. Sooner if he is not resoonding to your "comfort care.".

Exercise : Adding exercise and self control by reducing portion intake and eating the right foods while counting calories is best. Increase fruit and fiber intake if not eating enough. Take a yoga course or start swimming if not already. Good, low impact exercises. If considering surgical options, know that the best procedures and surgtons usually require that one starts losing weight first.
