A member asked:

What can cold medicine do to the baby in the first trimester? so, for about two weeks my friend has been taking cold medicine and cough medicine regularly on the doctors order. thing is, she didn't know she was pregnant until, well now. she figures that

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It : It depends on what cough and cold medicines she took. The good news - many cough and cold medicines are considered relatively safe to take during pregnancy. Since there are many many brands out there, i'll list the generic names of the active ingredients. If she took a medication with: - guafenesin - dextromethorphan - cough drops - vick's vapo-rub - acetaminophen - diphenhydramine then you can stop worrying. These are considered relatively safe during pregnancy. The two things that are not considered safe during pregnancy are cold remedies that contain alcohol and ones that contain Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine since both of these can effect blood flow to the placenta. If she has concerns about her pregnancy, she should contact her doctor to discuss. Good luck!
