Traumatic events: There is a strong genetic component in the development of panic disorder. Extraordinary stress or traumatic event to the genetically predisposed (susceptible) child results in the development of panic attack-discrete periods of intense anxiety symptoms.

Multiple factors: We do not fully understand panic attacks. We believe it is an interplay between a genetic or familial susceptibility to anxiety and some external trigger. The trigger can be a real or imagined event which produces the biologic response of extreme fearfulness. Panic attacks are treatable. Discuss treatment options with your doctor.
