Paint : Paint thinner is a solvent and can cause a chemical inflammation and irritation of the surface of the eye, but will not "melt" the eye out. Your own natural blinking mechnism will wash much of a toxin out, but flushing it out with water or eye irrigant (available at drug stores) is the best thing to do in order to dilute out the chemical and lessen local irritation. Severe cases can result in sloughing of the entire corneal epithelium which is painful and can take many days to heal even with the best of medical care.

Any : Any toxic substance can cause inflammation of the eye. Sometimes it is severe and somtimes less so...It all depends on the substance, how much was in the eye, how long it was there and how it was washed out. Lye compounds (e.g. Drano) are the worst and can cause corneal melt. Paint thinner is not caustic like drano but can cause much inflammation. If a foriegn substance gets in the eye, one easy way to wash it out is to get in the shower and let the water run on your face and in the eye. Hope that helps.

Paint : Paint thinner will cause a chemical burn in your eye. It must be flushed out immediately with eye flushing solutions. If the eye drops are not available, tap water will do. You should also receive antibiotic drops as a prophylaxis against infection. The answer to the second part of your question is "no". There are few rare incidence when the eye have to be removed from the eye socket (ex. Malignant tumor). Even if the eye is completely blind they are left in the socket.
