Is geodon (ziprasidone) safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes: There isn't a lot of information about this geodon (ziprasidone). We think it may, in some babies, interfere with the development of the brain. However, uncontrolled psychosis can also lead to problems. If you are starting medications, this isn't the first we would choose. However, if this is the only medication that helps, you may decide to continue it. You should have a long talk with your doctors about this.

Prenatal Consult: This is a question that needs to be answered on a case-by-case basis. All meds have risks, but it is important to weigh the risks of going off them and benefits of staying on them verses the risks of taking the medication during pregnancy or nursing. Psychiatric conditions pose their own risks to a pregnancy, too. See a perinatal psychiatrist to help you with this risk-benefit analysis.
