We : We do not think that pcos is imbedded in your genetic code and therefore is not considered an inherited or genetic disease per se. However, (there is always a however in medicine) certaain traits that predispose one to pcos could be inherited. For instance pcos increases estrogen levels, sometimes insulin-like growth factors (ilgf 1, 2), one and two and can play a role in carbohydrate metabolism. Many, but not all, women with pcos are overweight and have high circulating levels of ilgf 1, 2. Diet and weight loss are key to reducing these levels but sometimes other medications like metformin and ocp (oral contraceptives ) are required.
