Safety first: Provide safe environment. Do not try to wake patient up: they tend to become violent. If they happen at certain point in the night, scheduled waking 30 minutes before can disrupt the sleep cycle and less chances of them happning. Also, make sure to treat underlying causes, particularly if we're talking about adults (most kids grow out of them).

Protect them: Try and keep them in bed. Try and remove things around the bed which could be injurious. For sleep walkers (somnambulism), do not leave the door to the outside so they can escape- dead bolt with a key.
