Before : Before giving any medication to your 6 week old baby, i would advise calling your primary care provider. Infants of that age don't clear medications at the same rate than adults or older children. So avoid giving your infant any over the counter medications (like benadryl) until you seek further medical care. Hives are in general red or pink bumps or welts due to release of histamine. They are usually itchy. They can be caused by an allergic reaction to food, drugs, insect bites or even exercise-induced. Hives are also called urticaria. It maybe a good idea to try to identify what may be causing your baby to develop hives and avoid further exposure.

Hives: It should be weight-based but you really should bring the child into the pediatrician for evaluation first since this could be due to something else (infection) and why take a chance?!?!

Erythema toxicum: Rather than hives your infant may have a benign condition that affects infants. The cause is unknown but goes away without treatment. To be sure have your child checked by your pediatrician.
