It : It is probably not attached to a nerve. However, if it is a cyst it usually should be removed if it is painful and to prevent a future infection.

Ganglion Cyst?: A ganglion cyst is a swelling of the covering sheath of a nerve. That's probably what your doctor meant. If this is what you have and it is painful, then it's removal is indicated. Usually an orthopedic surgeon will be the specialist to see for removal.
