Burning: The most common side effects of BCG include local reactions to the medication. These symptoms include burning with urination, urinary frequency, and urethral discomfort. One of the most serious side effects is absorption of the medication causing tuberculosis. This generally will result in very high fevers, chills, and possible weakness.

Various: As stated the typical side effects are inflammation of the bladder which usually resolves. Some patients becoem intolerant and cannot receive the treatment. If BCG is absorbed into the bloodstream it can result in massive infection and (rarely) death. Bcg should never be given if there is obvious blood in the urine. Also the pt shouldvoid into the same toilet for 24 hours after BCG and add bleach.
