They : They are to drain fluid and I have never placed them.

The : The reason is the surgery opens large areas that can form fluids or blood. If left to accumulate than you could delay healing, cause an infection, etc. Drainage tubes are the "standard of care" . Hope this answers the issue. Regards dr. B.
