When : When you are congested, it can affect your sense of smell(and taste). Depending on how runny/congested your nose is, you can completely lose your sense of smell. This is almost always temporary and once the infection or allergies settle down, the sense of smell should return. If it doesn't, you should see your doctor to discuss.
