A few days: Ear drops will not help an otitis media, an infection behind the ear drum. They should be helpful within a few days for swimmer's ear (otitis externa), infectious drum blisters (bullous myringitis), or acute otitis media with ear drum rupture. Sometimes the canal swelling in swimmer's ear is so severe that the drops can't get in to work so a wick may be needed in the canal to pull in the drops.
