It's complicated: We still don't know where the pathology is in fibromyalgia (fm). It may have a shared pathological mechanism with migraines, central sensitization = some event in the brain sensitizes peripheral nerves to experience neuropathic pain constantly & more intensely. It is a chronic illness, which does have diagnostic criteria and management techniques.

Chronic pain: Fm is a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome. Symptoms include poor sleep, chronic sleep, and widespread pain with tender points. Headaches, irritable bowel, and shooting pains in the extremities are common, as is depression or anxiety. Treatment includes regular exercise, weight loss if needed, and meds to improve sleep and mood. Patients need to take a big role in their own management.
