Prion disease: Mad cow disease, a.K.A. Variant (or sporadic) creutzfeldt-jakob disease, is a prion disease. Prion protein is an "infectious" protein that is transmitted from exposure to brain tissue or proteins of someone or an animal with the disease. While it is possible to contract prion disease from oral ingestion of prion protein, those are extremely unlikely sources of prion protein.
