Appendicitis : Appendicitis occurs when the appendix (a small, worm-like organ attached to the large intestine) becomes inflamed and infected. The appendix will fill with pus and swell, and can burst if not treated quickly. This spills infection and stool into the abdominal cavity, and can lead to life-threatening infection. Symptoms of appendicitis can vary from person to person. However, most people with appendicitis complain of feeling sick, and lose their appetite. Abdominal pain usually develops over a period of hours, and becomes increasingly concentrated in the right lower part of the belly. Fever, nausea, and vomiting are common. If symptoms of appendicitis occur, you should seek medical treatment immediately. An experienced physician can usually judge whether symptoms are likely to be appendicitis, and a quick ultrasound or ct scan can confirm the diagnosis. If appendicitis is present, surgery is almost always necessary, and delay can be dangerous. Fortunately, appendix surgery is usually quite simple, and quick recovery is the rule.
