Possible reflux: Many gastric bypass patients experience alteration in GI emptying due to their new surgical connections. When ingested food then regurgitates or refluxes, burning or chest discomfort may result. Talk to your physicians about whether an acid blocker medicine should be tried or further investigation is warranted (especially in the event of swallowing difficulties).

Stricture: If you have had gastric bypass you may have a stricture where the small stomach remnant was connected to the small intestine(g-j) , this may require stretching by your surgeon or gastroenterologist.

Get an endoscopy: A few things can cause upper chest or abdominal pain several years after a bypass. A marginal ulcer can occur at the anastomosis. The symptoms would occur more frequently after meals. Pain is usually the main symptom. A stricture could also occur, which would typically result from an ulcer. Have your symptoms evaluated with an upper scope. In the meantime use an OTC med like Prilosec or Nexium (esomeprazole).
