When : When I am stitching a wound, i don't plan on a number of stitches, although there are guidelines. In general stitches in cosmetically important areas (such as the face) will be smaller and closer together, whereas stitched on a limb or the truck will be larger and further apart. The important thing for a doctor as he/she is stitching a wound is to use enough sutures so that there is no gaping if the wound is stretched, so sometimes, i find myself going back and placing more sutures than planned. For very deep wounds, "buried" stitches, that is absorbable sutures that are placed in deep tissues such as muscle to keep then together are uses.

Depends: All depends on location, type of wound, stitches type and surgeon's preference.
