Yes, : Yes, cat scans and ct scans are the same thing. The acronym cat stands for computed axial tomography and ct stands for computed tomography. The terms can be used interchangeably, but ct is used more commonly among medical professionals. Images are generated by projecting a rapidly rotating x-ray fan-beam through a patient and then detecting the x-ray radiation that passes through the patient. A computer then processes the detected information, calculates a MAP of the density of the tissues imaged, and generates an image based on the calculated densities. The raw images are almost always obtained as axial (also known as transverse) slices through the patient. However, the data on newer ct machines can be reprocessed and turned into images in other planes such as coronal and sagittal planes.
