Depends: Many surgeons work from panoramic and PA single images with great success, precision and safety. However, for more complex applications around the sinus and inferior alveolar nerve areas, the 3D scan is the standard for safety and accuracy. Even then, we see differences once we clinically visualize the bone. Radiation exposure is less than you might think as it is quickly completed. Good Luck.

Yes: It is the best course of action, the more accurate the pre operative preparation, the better the outcome. Today CT Scan represent almost the same amount of the old panoramic Rx.

Best choice: Imaging is designed to give the practitioner a visual window into tissues that are not visible to the naked eye. The more accurate the diagnostic test, the more accurate the treatment. Amount of radiation is less that a couple of days of normal background radiation, in other words very low. In a risk/reward situation, the risk is infinitesimally small, the reward in information gained, huge.
