A member asked:

One or two breast mri procedures? i have to get a mri to look at my breasts - is it standard to do a mri for each breast, or can the machine look at both at the same time?

Both : Both breasts are imaged at the same time. During the procedure, the woman lies on her stomach inside the magnet. The breasts are positioned within two magnetic imaging coils. Neither the patient nor the table move during the exam. Multiple sets of images are obtained of both breasts. Then, intravenous contrast is given and both breasts are imaged over several minutes. It is important that both breasts are imaged because the normal breast can be used to compare with the abnormal breast. This is also useful in the situation when there is cancer in both breasts.

Both breasts: Doing a breast mri, they will check both breasts at the same time. Breast MRI is somewhat more sensitive than mammogrm in detecting breast cancer. But it has higher false positive rate. It needs a high degree of expertise by the radiologist to interpret an mri.

Both: A breast MRI is always of both breasts (unless it is done to guide a biopsy).
