The : The barium sulfate ingested leaves the body via bowel movements. The length of time it takes to be excreted depends on how quickly your bowels are moving. On average, it is probably excreted in 1 to 3 days. There is virtually no risk of the barium doing you harm even if it remains there for weeks. You did not indicate how long it has been since your last bowel movement; if it has been several days, a laxative certainly would not hurt but you may want to discuss the problem with your primary care provider.

Barium: Barium leaves the body through the intestine in the feces. However, because barium is constipating, some patients may have trouble getting the barium out of the intestine. I would drink plenty of fluids, but if there is no bowel movement for 2 or 3 days, a laxative may be necessary so that the barium can be eliminated from the intestine.
