What are the indications that a heart is failing?

Many: Hearts fail in different ways, and over time frames that can be shorter or longer. Typically you feel more short of breath with activity, or feel more short of breath at night when lying flat. The ankles can swell. Most insidiously, you can simply have less energy to do things during the day, and it might take a careful listener to order the right tests to make the diagnosis.

Fatigue: As the heart starts to fail fatigue and shortness of breath particularly with exertion begin to occur. Later, swelling of the feet and legs, inability to lie flat at night and coughing may happen. Eventually, even at rest these symptoms can exist.
