A member asked:

My sister in law had a cornea eye surgery it's been a week and the doctor told her not to sleep on the side of the eye that got the surgery?

Precaution: It takes a while for the cornea to develop proper strength. The sleeping suggestion is to avoid putting pressure on the eye until enough healing to be strong has taken place. Best to sleep on the back but she can sleep of the opposite side if that is comfortable.

Common protocol : By not resting the head on the side of eye surgery, you are protecting it against the undesirable pressure effect from the pillow against the closed eyelids. Usually, however, a plastic shield is affixed with tape over the eye prior to going to bed to protect it during sleep. This latter eye shield is usually all that is needed for protection and therefore, tends not to matter what side you sleep.
