Get at the cause: See your doctor for an evaluation. X-rays and/or lab tests may be necessary to diagnose what exactly is going on. It sounds like arthritis, and there are many different types of arthritis. If it is at the base of the joint, and there is bump on the side, it could be a bunion. See your doctor for a more specific answer.
