How long does it usually take before a cerebral aneurysm to rupture?

No one knows: Once the diagnosis of a cerebral aneurysm is made, it is best to fix it soon as no one knows when it will rupture. Most cerebral aneurysms cause no symptoms until they rupture. However, it is unknown how long the aneurysm was there prior to rupturing. It is usually by accident that cerebral aneurysms are diagnosed before rupturing.

Unknown: Average age of rupture of brain aneurysms is 52. It likely takes a few years but this is so variable. Aneurysms are rarely seen in kids or people less than 35 years of age. Additional factors such as uncontrolled hypertension, smoking, connective tissue disease may accelerate the process to an aneurysn rupturing. Using Cocaine is also known to accelerate rupture.
