A long time: Tongue swelling can continue for hours or days if the cause of the swelling is not removed or avoided. For example, if penicillin allergy is causing the swelling and the patient continues taking penicillin then the swelling will continue and possibly get worse. Tongue swelling may not go away by itself. Proper treatment like antihistamines and steroids may be needed. It is an emergency.
