Si pain may be more frequent than we once thought (perhaps up to 25%) however it is not easy to diagnose as the typical physical examination tests for si joint pain are not reliable. Also, pain from the lumbar spine frequently presents with pain over the si joint. Direct injection of local anesthetic (+/- cortisone) is felt to be a more reliable way to diagnose si pain.
