Periodontal disease: Most people who need deep cleanings have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the loss of bone around your teeth. This is normally caused by bacteria deep in your gums. A deep cleaning helps to control that bacteria and control the bone loss. The longer you wait, the more bone you will lose. That bone doesn't grow back by itself.

Deep Clean: Your dentist should have taken x-rays and done a periodontal charting of six measurements per tooth in order to be able to diagnose the level of gum disease. Consider over 50% of adult americans have gum disease. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. Once a diagnosis has been established one of the first and most effective treatments for early gum disease is a deep cleaning.
