Pulpectomy: A pulpectomy is a root canal treatment. It is the total removal of the pulp. A pulpotomy is the removal of the pulp (nerve) from the crown portion of the tooth. This is a temporary treatment to relieve acute pain and reduce inflammation. A complete root canal treatment needs to be done after a pulpotomy in order for the infected tooth to heal.

Root Canal Therapy: If the root canal therapy is not completed, in almost 100% of cases, in time the tissue and fluids within the canal(s) of the root(s) of the teeth will eventual become infected and result in either an acute or chronic infection in your jawbone. This sequence of events will also decrease the prognosis of success when the root canal therapy is eventually completed.

One and the same: A pulpectomy is the first part of root canal therapy. It means total removal of the pulp from the tooth. That leaves a space inside the tooth that must be rendered sterile and then filled and sealed w a root canal filling material!

In short yes: Think of a Pulpectomy as the start of a root canal, the inflamed portion of the nerve is removed and medicated filling placed, a short time after your dentist will remove the medicated filling and complete the root canal process......if the root canal process is not completed the tooth has a very high prognosis for re-infection
