Medical treatment: Is limited to pressure relief, minimize moisture and contamination (urine and stool), and dressing changes. Best treatment is surgical but most patients are not good candidates.

Pressure relief: Bedsores are caused by unrelieved pressure on the soft tissues overlying a bony area. The key is to get them off and keep them off the area to allow healing. Once damaged, the tissues heal through inflammation which is the bodies way to get fresh healing blood to the injured area.As the damaged nerves heal, they let you know by causing pain which is a good sign. Motrin and advil (ibuprofen) slow down healing.

Unloading: The best treatment is to prevent additional pressure on the pressure sore. Supportive wound care is tailored to the type of injury. Large open wounds require dressing changes and may require surgical closure by a plastic surgeon. Red areas on the skin are treated with unweighting and moisturizer to the skin. The real injury is under the skin, closer to the bone.
