Neuritis: Its not unusual for a small nerve which passes over a bump at the base of the great toe to become irritated by a shoe (usually when there is a bunion present). This can cause numbness and sometimes pain along the nerve. If you are talking about the great toe and you have a bunion (even a mild one), this could be the cause.
