First cause must be: Established. Is it nerve related from the carpal tunnel, is it circulation perhaps in response to cold? Is there a joint with deformity at the tip as common in osteoarthritis? Is there dry skin or red skin or a swollen area near the nail? Is there a red hot gouty joint? Was there trauma, a fracture, a tendon injury.
