Pinhole effect: Squinting narrows the space between the lids and eliminates stray light, allowing the direct rays to focus on the back of your eye, improving the focus. In the clinic we use a device with many pinholes in it to measure visual potential and you do something similar with squinting. It unfortunately eliminates much of the light so it is not a practical device.
