Why does squinting one's eye temporarily improve vision?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pinhole effect: When you squint, you narrow the opening in front of your eye to allow only direct rays of light into the eye which improves clarity. Ophthalmologists use this as a clinical test with a pinhole paddle to see if you need eyeglasses. This is not functionally useful as it cuts off the major amount of light but is a good test for a need for glasses.
