Chest wall: Coughing involves contraction of the chest wall muscles. After a while this can take its toll on the joints, ligaments and muscles which then cause pain when you cough. If there is pain without coughing, such as when you take a deep breath, then the membranes of the lungs might be inflamed. In any case talk to your physician if this persists.
