Too much: Usually recommended daily intake of biotin for adults is 30-100 µg [micrograms]; so 5000 µg is far more than necessary. Biotin is incorporated slowly, so high doses aren't going to move things along any more quickly. Gradually increase dose from 100 up to 1000 µg. May take 3-4 months to see effects. Note: egg whites bind biotin; so don't take them together.

Probably shouldn't: Biotin deficiency is rare, but can occur in persons with genetic mutations, on long-term antibiotics or anti-convulsants, or who eat a lot of raw egg whites. There is no good evidence that this easily available, over-the-counter supplement is the magic potion to grow hair or prevent hair loss. Biotin is safe to take, but 5000 mcg per day is over 30 times the usual dose, so is not advisable.
