Can be many things: Most likely alcoholic gastritis or esophagitis, inflammation caused by alcohol, but could also be an ulcer, pancreatitis or alcoholic hepatitis. People aren't alcoholic by day and not at night. He needs help. Talk to your doctor and seek referral to counseling. If he does not want to, you can still get your own help with alanon and/or a family therapist. He needs to see his doctor urgently.

Gastritis?: Alcohol causes gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining. He could also have an ulcer. He deserves a check up with a physician and a plan to decrease his alcohol consumption.
