A member asked:

I took 450 milligrams of zantac (ranitidine) yesterday prior to taking a store bought, dip stick style ua at work and it came back positive for meth? how did this

A doctor has provided 1 answer

False positive: Many medications have similarities to the molecular structure of drugs of abuse, and ranitidine (the chemical in zantac) can give false positives. Assuming you mean positive for methamphetamine, this is not a common false positive, but is reported. Almost any cold medicine (afrin, sudafed, phenylephrine and others) can also give false positive amphetamine results. Confirmatory tests are negative.
