Can be: Orhotics are typically for comfort. If they don't feel better than not having them in, don't wear them.

Yes: Orthotics are primarily for comfort. If they hurt, they are not helping you. Some orthotics prescribed can make a condition worse such as if an orthotic with a high arch is given to a patient with a cavus foot.
A 47-year-old member asked:

Do I need different kinds of orthotics made depending on my sport?

No: Orthotics are purely for comfort for most people. If one orthotic feels better to you for different sports, then you may have more than one pair, but no orthotic is better than another for specific sports. However, a certified orthotist may be helpful in answering this question as well.

I am just wondering how orthotics really work?

Try to help: Orthotics are merely a brace, therefore, they will only correct while you wear them. The question is then : what do they do when you don’t wear them? The answer is; they are only effective when they are in ones shoes. They correct (if applied with the proper understanding of their function and the way they were made if custom) gait (the way you walk) and improve body symmetry at the ground level.

Orthotics: Improperly fitted orthotics can cause problems with the feet, knees, hips and back. See a podiatrist or foot specialist if otc is not working, you may need custom ones.
